FAQ

Frequent Questions and Answers

Q: Do you encrypt the storage device (hard drive or SSD)?
A: This is up to you, and we recommend storage device encryption for all ThinkPads. When placing an order, you will have the opportunity to specify whether or not you want storage encryption. If we do encrypt your computer's storage, we will provide a default encryption passphrase to you that you will need to use when booting your computer. We will also provide instructions for adding a new passphrase and removing the default passphrase we created.

Q: Why does LAC Portland recommend storage encryption for all ThinkPads?
A:
We recommend encrypting the storage in order to protect your data in case your ThinkPad laptop is ever lost or stolen. If your computer's storage is not encrypted, it is trivially easy for someone with the hardware in their possession to read unencrypted data on the computer's storage device (even if they do not know your login password).

Q: How will you partition the hard drive?
A:
This, too, is up to you. When placing an order, you will have the opportunity to specify how you would like the hard drive partitioned in your computer. Unless you know you want something different, we recommend using the operating system defaults which are appropriate for most use cases.

Q: I’m a new Linux user. What if I don’t know how I want the hard drive partitioned?
A: When presenting the question about how to partition the hard drive, the input box will be pre-populated with a recommended partition scheme. This works perfectly well for most use cases and if you are unsure about this option, you can just leave it at the defaults we recommend.

Q: Will hardware item X (X = external video, wireless, audio, input device, etc.) work in my computer with the operating system I selected?
A: Yes. We perform a rigorous hardware test suite in every computer for every operating system we offer to ensure all hardware works as expected. We will include a hard copy of the test results in the box with your computer. Sample items include:

  • Wireless data transfer speed and integrity

  • Wired data transfer speed and integrity (if applicable)

  • Onboard audio input / output

  • Headset audio input / output

  • Camera, ensure fully functional

  • External video, ensure fully functional

  • Keyboard multimedia buttons, ensure fully functional

  • Touchpad, ensuring fully functional and settings are user-configurable

  • TrackPoint, ensuring fully functional and settings are user-configurable

  • Hard drive, ensure partition alignment is optimal and speeds are as expected

  • Touch screen and stylus, ensure fully functional and aligned (if applicable)

  • USB ports, ensure fully functional and data transfer speeds are as expected

  • Card reader, ensure fully functional and data transfer speeds are as expected

  • Suspend, ensure suspend and resume work in every possible way to suspend
